Great article I received and wanted to share.
Automatic
dishwashers are magical machines and a real timesaver in the kitchen, but they can damage items, and some of them are quite expensive to
repair or replace. It's better to be safe and handwash these kitchen and dining
room items.
If
you do choose to slip them in the dishwasher, opt for the top rack and be
prepared to accept your mistakes!
#1 - Wooden Spoons, Bowls and Cutting Boards
The
harshness of dishwasher detergents can strip the natural oils that keep wooden
utensils and cutting boards from drying out. When those oils are stripped, the
wood will begin to crack.
Wooden
items should be hand washed quickly with a mild detergent in warm water. Do not
allow them to soak because that can cause the wood to swell and distort. If you
feel the wood needs to be disinfected, use a mild solution of chlorine bleach and warm water–1/4 cup of bleach to 1/2
gallon of water.
